Who Are You? January 11, 2010

Leigh Botts, the main character in Beverly Cleary’s Dear Mr. Henshaw, gives us a great mentor text for a response to the question:  “Who are you?”   Leigh is very honest and forthright with his response  to the question and I would encourage all of you to do the same!

Here is Leigh’s response:

“Like I’ve been telling, you, I am Leigh Botts…. I don’t like Leigh for a name because some people don’t know how to say it or think it’s a girls name.  Mom says with a last name like Botts I need something fancy but not too fancy.  My Dad’s name is Bill and Mom’s name is Bonnie.  She says Bill and Bonnie Botts sounds like something out of a comic strip.

I am just a plain boy.  This school doesn’t say I am Gifted and Talented, and I don’t like soccer very much the way everybody at this school is supposed to.  I am not stupid either.”

NOW, it’s your turn!  Share your response in the COMMENTS below this entry.  Also, take some time to read your classmates’ pieces and feel free to REPLY to their comments.

IMPORTANT REMINDER:  NO LAST NAMES!

The tiger strikes the prey

Devors the prey

The tiger has had his lunch

I run,
kicking the ball as I go
we’re losing,
but there’s still hope!
score!

we won!
Yayyy!!!

We were running around the field hockey ball,
In our lime green uniforms,
We all have hope,
The ball flies,
We scored!

Its own little world,
A shady place,
Where fairies dance all day,
Wearing skirts hemmed with lace.

They dance like this for hours,
At their one little balls,
They dance and prance and laugh,
And they laugh with all.

Bad day
Cold and gray
I just feel
Upset
Bored
Plain old bad
Nothing’s going good
I just want to
Lie down
Fall asleep
Relax

Running Outside

It’s showery outside
With dark clouds
And red leaves falling
you want to dress
in shoes
And have a rain coat with you
So you’re not soaking wet
Then run home
Relax.

Racing home
On the green grass
In first place
The final stretch
Two friends behind you

Rubber bands can be any color like
Red, blue, green
You can use them by stretching
Then let go
Racing with the breezy wind
Just a reminder…
Don’t fling any rubber band
At me.

                           Fall

Its Fall
Orange, yellow, and brown
Leaves
Are scattered all over the ground
Shoes crunch over the dead leaves
My dog trotting at my side
I pick up a leaf
A maple
I gaze up at a cloud
Looks the same
I love all of fall colors
Reds, oranges, yellows, and browns
It’s finally Fall
